"Stepping into The Quarry as Golf Course Superintendent with a major regrassing project already well into the planning process could have been an extremely challenging transition. Although construction had not yet begun, countless decisions had already been made and a tremendous amount of preparation had taken place. Fortunately, Darren had created a clear path forward through his work as Interim Superintendent and Project Manager.
From my first day, I understood where the project had been, where it stood, and what needed to happen next. Darren provided detailed site visit reports, project plans, specifications, budgets, timelines, and background on the decisions that had already been made. That level of preparation gave me an invaluable roadmap and allowed me to hit the ground running.
Instead of spending my first several months trying to reconstruct the history of a major project while simultaneously learning the golf course and managing the operation, I was able to focus immediately on leading the staff, managing the day-to-day operation, and implementing the agronomic program. I could do that with confidence because the larger project already had a well-defined direction, scope, and budget.
Just as importantly, Darren’s involvement did not end when I arrived. He continues to be an extremely valuable resource to me. We speak regularly, and whether I am looking for another perspective, discussing an agronomic challenge, considering a project decision, or simply looking for someone experienced to bounce an idea off of, Darren is always willing to help.
His combination of agronomic knowledge, project experience, organization, and attention to detail is difficult to replicate. He understands both the big picture and the day-to-day realities of operating a golf course, and that perspective has been extremely valuable to me.

"I have had the pleasure of working closely with Darren Davis since the early 1990s, when we collaborated on the creation of the golf course at the Olde Florida Golf Club. Since that time, under the leadership of my Yale classmate Tom Kukk, Darren Davis and Tom Wildenhaus have successfully managed and operated Olde Florida Golf Club, giving Darren the unique perspective of understanding both golf club operations and golf course maintenance at the highest level.
Our professional relationship continued when we developed the neighboring golf course at the Golf Club of the Everglades, where Darren made significant contributions both during its original construction and again during the 2015 reimagination of the course. Rees Jones
Rees Jones, son of legendary golf course architect Robert Trent Jones Sr., grew up immersed in the game and founded Rees Jones, Inc. in 1974 after beginning his career with his father’s firm. He has designed or renovated more than 300 golf courses and earned the nickname “The Open Doctor” for his work preparing major championship venues, including U.S. Open, PGA Championship, Ryder Cup, Walker Cup and Presidents Cup sites.
